Fourth Grade Curriculum

 

Language Arts

Students will be taking the Florida Writes portion of the FCAT this year. Therefore, writing is a major part of the 4th grade curriculum. Students will learn the following skills:

  • How to read and write from a given prompt
  • How to use prewriting strategies to generate ideas and formulate a plan before writing
  • How to write an expository and narrative essay
  • Write a draft appropriate to the topic, audience, and purpose
  • Revise and refine a draft for clarity and effectiveness
  • Edit and correct the draft for standard language conventions
  • Write a final product for the intended audience
  • Creative Writing
  • Effectively applies Listening and Speaking Strategies
  • Different forms of Poetry

 

Science

  • Earth Science-Water Cycle, Weather, and Minerals and Rocks
  • Physical Science-Properties of Matter, Electricity and Magnetism, Sound and Light
  • Space and Technology-Earth’s Cycles and Inner and Outer Planets
  • Life Science-Classifying Plants and Animals, Ecosystems, and Systems of the Human Body

 

Social Studies

The 4th grade Social Studies covers all of Florida History. Including the Geography of Florida, Native Floridians, Explorers, Colonization, Statehood, Economic Growth, Modern Florida, and Government

 

Mathematics

Students will be learning the following skills from the Everyday Math Curriculum:

  • Geometric Figures
  • Organizing Data
  • Multiplication and Division; Algebra, Number Sense
  • Decimals/Fractions and their uses
  • Measuring Angles
  • Perimeter and Area
  • Percents
  • Weight, Volume, and Capacity
  • Master Basic Facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

 

Reading

  • Identify author’s purpose
  • Uses a variety of strategies to comprehend grade level text
  • Use context clues to determine meanings of unfamiliar words
  • Identify main idea
  • Cause and Effect
  • Use a variety of strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary
  • Use information from a text to write details with support for answers
  • Sequence events
  • Demonstrate understanding of different genres
  • Write Short/Extended responses using details and examples to support the answer
